Stop Slavery in Africa! Action in Brussels

Slavery is a complex and sensitive issue in modern Africa, and while it has officially been abolished in many countries, there are still reports of slavery-like practices occurring in some regions. Here are some key points about slavery in modern Africa:

In some parts of Africa, particularly in conflict zones or areas with weak governance, instances of forced labor, debt bondage, and human trafficking still exist. Vulnerable populations, such as migrants and refugees, are often at risk of exploitation and forced labor.

Child labor is also a form of exploitation that can be likened to slavery. Children are sometimes forced to work in hazardous conditions, denied education, and subjected to physical or emotional abuse.

Human trafficking for various purposes, including forced labor and sexual exploitation, continues to be a significant problem in Africa. Vulnerable individuals, especially women and children, are often lured into trafficking networks with false promises.

Some individuals fall into debt bondage, a form of modern slavery where a person is forced to work to repay a debt, often under exploitative conditions with little or no pay.

Efforts are being made by governments, NGOs, and international organizations to combat these practices and protect the rights of vulnerable populations in Africa. However, the persistence of these issues highlights the need for continued advocacy, awareness, and action to address modern forms of slavery in the region.

In this regard, the Belgian sector of Solidaritätsnetz International has launched a campaign in Brussels to remind Europeans of Africa’s problems! The head office in Bern expresses solidarity with our comrades in Brussels!
