Political repression against Marina Tauber

On June 23, 2022, at the EU summit, it was decided to grant Moldova the status of an EU candidate. However, the indicated year brought into the life of Moldova an unprecedented social crisis caused by energy problems and the armed conflict in Ukraine.

Solidaritätsnetz International is aware that during times of war and crisis, civil strife also increases. Political leaders and power structures begin to neglect human rights, level the levers of influence of civil society, justifying their illegal behavior by the need to achieve abstract and lofty goals.

A superficial look at the situation in Moldova is enough to realize that there is a deep social crisis in the country, the disappointment of society and the growing political confrontation. The public authorities, managing the apparatus of coercion, are tempted to use the criminal justice in order to put pressure on political opponents.

We are interested in the case of the Moldavian politician Ms. Marina Tauber. Solidaritätsnetz International, through its observers, collected information directly in Moldova, we studied the available sources and made a request to the diplomatic structures in Moldova.

We know that the Moldovan politician Ms. Marina Tauber was held in custody when we started working on her case, despite the fact that Ms. Tauber is accused of crimes not related to the commission of violent acts. At the moment, the criminal prosecution of Ms. Marina Tauber continues.

Taking into account the current situation in Moldova and assessing the risks, the Board of our Organization considered it necessary to recognize Ms. Marina Tauber as a political prisoner and express its solidarity with her, providing all possible assistance in her defense. We will demand that all charges be dropped and that Ms. Marina Tauber be rehabilitated.

In the case of Ms. Marina Tauber, the public authorities grossly violated Article 5 of the Rome Convention (1950) and the article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (1966), which will be proved by us.

Solidaritätsnetz International will address statements and protests, both of a political-diplomatic and legal nature, to the competent authorities of Moldova and Switzerland. In the prescribed manner, we will inform the UN, the EU and the OSCE, both in writing and by sending our official representative.

Solidaritätsnetz International reserves the right to hold public actions, as well as other actions of direct influence. For direct assistance to Ms. Marina Tauber, monitoring and consultations in the field of international humanitarian law it was considered necessary to send an authorized member of the Organization to Chisinau.

Solidaritätsnetz International remains true to its principles and philosophy, and therefore we will continue the fight until the full restoration of law and justice in the case of Ms. Marina Tauber.
